What are "the 90 essential nutrients"?

The phrase comes from Dr. Joel Wallach, the veterinary-pathologist-turned-physician behind Dead Doctors Don't Lie. His framework says the human body asks for roughly 90 building blocks every day, and that most of them have to arrive through what we eat. The count breaks down like this:

60 minerals. The largest and, in Wallach's telling, the most neglected group — from the familiar (calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron) to trace and rare-earth elements most people have never heard named. His central argument is that mineral content in food depends on mineral content in soil, and that modern farm soil has been giving less back for decades.

16 vitamins. The letters you know — A, the B family, C, D, E, K — each with a role Wallach walks through in plain, non-technical language.

12 amino acids. The protein building blocks he counts as essential or conditionally essential — the reason he spends so much time on complete protein sources.

2 essential fatty acids. The omega fats the body cannot make on its own.

Why the number is controversial

Mainstream nutrition references recognize a shorter essential list. Wallach's count is deliberately broader — he includes elements whose necessity is still argued about, and he built his case on decades of comparative work in animals, including 17,500 autopsies across 454 animal species and 3,000 humans. Critics say he over-counts; his readers say the animal data was ahead of its time. The point of reading him is to see the full argument from the primary source and decide for yourself.

Common questions

Is this the same as "90 For Life"? "90 For Life" is the slogan Youngevity (the company Dr. Wallach founded) built around the same framework. The books are where the framework itself comes from.

Do I need the book if I can find lists online? Online lists give you the names. The book gives you Wallach's reasoning — which nutrients he pairs together, why he thinks food alone falls short, and the stories behind each claim. That context is the whole point.

Is there a Spanish edition? Yes — Los Médicos Muertos No Mienten (PDF + EPUB).
